| Hey, does that Fan Run in Reverse?

This is the question that every knowledgeable fan professional hears daily.  The proper response…  You bet your bottom dollar it does! 

Remember that physics class in High School?  That one we all had to sit through.  The teacher stood at the front and asked the whole class – "Is it easier to push or pull?"  The outcome somewhat applies to air movement from fans as well.  The difference however, is that fans are designed specifically to push. 

Because of this, some manufacturers/industrial professionals will tell you that operating your fan in reverse is a waste of time, as it's less efficient (and there is some truth to that statement).  In reality, this response is their way of saying "No, this fan cannot run in reverse."

Truth is, there are a number of applications where a reverse operation isn't only preferable – it's a requirement. 

Think about an indoor swimming pool… high ceilings, open space and typically poor overall circulation (all things HVLS Fans are looking for).  The challenge isn't circulation – but creating circulation without generating a draft that can chill wet swimmers as they exit the water.  Not much of a challenge for an Altra-Air HVLS operating in reverse. 

Now think about an ice skating rink… high ceilings, open space and nearly non-existent circulation.  Again the challenge isn't circulation (that's quite easy).  The challenge here is that hot air is found at ceiling level and forcing it onto a cold ice surface will melt the ice.  Once again, the problem is solved by an Altra-Air HVLS operating in reverse. 

All that being said, having the reversible feature in an HVLS fan should be a minimum requirement.  As an experienced fan professional I can tell you that selling a fan is easy.  Listening to the customer about their challenge and providing the solution is the key.  More often than you would think, a reverse functioning HVLS Fan is that solution.

| Brrr! Is it Cold in Here?

Here's a fun game, what's the connection here… Frozen food, pharmaceuticals, petro-chemicals and high-tech electronics. (That's an interesting collection of products). If you haven't guessed – they all use Cold Storage.

Cold Storage is largely the same as any other storage facility… with two very large exceptions. The air temperature inside the space is crucial to the overall storage system and the products they are meant to preserve. All those products mentioned above expire quickly when stored outside their temperature range. And if the products expire… let's not go there.

The other difference (I mentioned two)? Energy consumption. And it's not cheap! Typically energy expenses are second only to labor at most facilities like these.

So, you have a big space with high ceilings where a perfectly consistent temperature somewhere between pretty cold and well below freezing is integral yet expensive to achieve. (wait… that sounds like warm storage November through March here in Canada!) Anyway, Altra-Air Fans can solve the ever-present temperature inconsistency problems commonly found in this type of environment. But will they work in the cold? They sure do!

It doesn't matter what the temperature is inside a space, hot air naturally rises (known as stratification)

Let's design an example, the temperature set point in a frozen food storage facility is kept at -2ᴼC (28ᴼF). The thermostat measures the temperatures and directs the chilling equipment to provide additional cooling when necessary. However, we know that is not an accurate representation of the ceiling temperature… or the floor temperature… or even the temperature down the aisle around the corner from the thermostat.

No cooling, or heating system for that matter, can provide 100% consistent floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall air temperature. The key to providing this is circulation. And the most effective way to circulate air inside a large space – Altra-Air HVLS Fans. What's great is the secondary benefit of massive air circulation, reduced condensation, another huge issue in spaces like these.

We've completed numerous cold storage applications over the last decade or so. The consistent request… Product stored on lower racks need to be the same temperature as product stored on higher racks. This isn't an unreasonable request – just one that needs careful thought and consideration. The right placement for your fan will be essential to the outcome. Millions are spent annually to update and improve systems to save on product loss and energy costs. Why not consider a departure from the norm and look at alternative methods to achieve the same at a much lower initial cost by incorporating Altra-Air into your solution?

| Caution - Slippery When Wet!

Where I come from stepping around these signs is customary a good share of the year. While they can at times be quite a nuisance business owners would never take them down, they simply can’t afford lawsuits from their customers. These concerns aren’t isolated to customers, employees miss more time for injuries from ‘slips, trips and falls’ than any other workplace accident.

Whether caused by the elements tracked in on shoes and boots or sweating concrete floors, injuries from related accidents lead to lost time, increased compensation and lawsuits. No wonder workplace accidents are a manager’s worst nightmare. But what’s the solution? I’m glad you asked… it's prevention.

Yep, Prevention is the Best Medicine. Seems pretty simple right – just don’t let the floors get wet in the first place. Ok, that might be a tad unrealistic (especially in some applications). So what’s the next logical step? Don’t let the floors stay wet!

This is where a knowledgeable and experienced air movement professional steps in. Air circulation across a wet floor can dramatically reduce the time it takes to dry naturally. Most people use this same concept daily without even realizing it. Drying laundry on a clothesline, automated car washes and the common household hairdryer all use air movement to dry.

The majority of our customers purchase our solutions to de-stratify heat or generate comfort cooling. But the subtle, lesser known benefits of Altra-Air HVLS fans do a lot of very import things – drying floors is near the top of that list. Forcing dryer/warmer air across a wet surface is the fastest way to dry a floor. Combined with continual air movement, one can minimize the buildup of moisture creating a more safe and comfortable environment.

Let’s use the example of an automotive service bay. Dealerships bring cars into their bays, service, wash and return them to their owners. Seems pretty simple and straight forward… until your fixing cars with damp tools and wet feet.

With the simple installation of an Altra-Air HVLS Fan, the non-disruptive air circulation creates a mass comfort zone while helping dry wet surfaces. Employees, customers and visitors are now more productive and safer from ‘slips, trips and falls’.

Oh and the best part? – Our 24’ Altra-Air HVLS Fan consumes less energy than that household hairdryer we mentioned earlier. Yes you read that correctly. At full speed (57 RPM) it is only consuming 1400W.

| What’s with the Bumps on that Fan?

It sure seems like everybody and their brother will sell you an HVLS Fan these days. After all, it’s pretty simple to throw some 12’ long blades on a motor and make it spin. But the next time you’re considering a purchase, take a step back and study the design. If it looks like a big fan and spins like a big fan… it doesn’t mean it should be categorized as an HVLS Fan.

High Volume Low Speed Fans have become a popular solution to what can normally be expensive problems.  The undereducated will tell you that an HVLS Fan is simply a big fan that spins slowly and any one that does such will be sufficient. However, what is forgotten is that it is meant to circulate very large volumes of air with extreme efficiency in order to justify purchasing one in the first place – you know to actually solve the problem!

To summarize… all HVLS Fans are not made equally. 

The key to the performance of any fan is the design of its airfoils.  As a manufacturer, we consider the application for our product and then design the airfoil that maximizes the performance within that application.  When it comes to HVLS Fans…. The definition is in the title.  Move High Volumes, at Slow Speeds, no matter the application. 

Our competitors will tell you that a direct drive motor is best, or that the control is integral to performance, or my personal favourite – you need fancy wingtips to send air over and around obstructions.  In reality, all these features are the same… just another sales pitch.  I’ll say it again, the key is moving the most air with the greatest of ease.

(WRITERS NOTE – what I’m about to discuss can also be considered a ‘sales pitch’.  I ask that you read the supporting documentation that proves our technology is the real deal.  Don’t just take my word for it).

| Chill Out, reducing your electric bill is easy.

Being Canadian there are a few things we know - besides Beer, Hockey and Maple Syrup.  Dealing with our weather variables makes us pretty knowledgeable on heating and cooling.  For example, our location in southern Ontario can experience extreme temperature swings ranging from -40°C in the winter to +40°C in the summer (which is why we can’t live in those comfy igloos year round).

Those exterior winter temperatures sure are nasty – but living through that annually gives us firsthand knowledge on how to make things cold (insert cold beer joke here).  January daily routine - Wake up, make coffee, turn on the Weather Network and see how cold it is.  Seems a little redundant right?  You know it’s cold, just dress warm, suck it up a nd get on with your day already.

But the reality is that we aren’t necessarily interested in the temperature.  What we as Canadians are after is the “Feels Like” temperature.  Just like an HVAC system, comfort level is the goal of our daily inquiry to the Weather Network. 

The temperature is only a small piece of that puzzle.  Humidity and wind speeds are equally as important.  Both of those variables (along with the temperature) produce the all-important “Feels Like” result. 

With an Air Conditioning system the same principles apply.  The temperature is important – but the reason most systems are installed is for occupant comfort.  That means other factors (air speeds and humidity) can contribute to the effectiveness of the system.  In most cases, these ‘other factors’ are ignored in favour of the temperature. 

Enter the Altra-Air HVLS Fan.  Capable of producing consistent, non-disruptive breeze evenly throughout a large space, while consuming very little energy. 

The principles are simple (and derived from our stereotypical Canadian experience above), increase the air speed (wind) to reduce the “Feels Like” temperature. The example here shows an actual air temperature of 25°C but a “Feels Like” temperature of 19.5°C when considered with air movement from an Altra-Air HVLS Fan. Yes it now feels 5.5°C colder!

Now the temperature is too cold for comfort, allowing the operator to increase his temperature set point as much as 5.5°C and decrease his energy consumption.

Envira-North has first-hand experience retrofitting High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans into existing Air Conditioned facilities in some of the hottest locations in the world. One of many of our successful applications was installed Dubai in 2012. A 2,500m² air conditioned manufacturing facility installed a single 6.1m diameter Altra-Air HVLS fan to work in concert with their air conditioning system.

We expected that the project would pay for itself in a short period and our knowledge and calculations proved right. The operator increased the temperature set point a mere 2°C. This very minor adjustment resulted in a 34% decrease in electrical consumption for cooling. A tidy $14,708 USD savings was realized over the first 6 months.

ROI you say? Well how does 2.12 MONTHS sound? Most are happy with a 2 YEAR return on investment. On top of that, interviews with the employees revealed that they felt more comfortable even though the air temp was now higher and they felt the air seemed fresher. Comfortable workers are more productive, it’s been proven time and again. Add productivity gains to the ROI and you have even better results. We didn’t bother estimating that on this one though, a 2 month ROI is excellent! Okay now I’m just bragging…
